What if streets were open for walking, running, rolling, biking, playing, and dancing? No cars or trucks. Just people powered movement?
On October 28th, 2017 from 8am to 1pm, Philadelphia is going to find out. This year’s Philly Free Streets event begins and ends in El Centro de Oro, the 5th street “Golden Block” central corridor of our own Fairhill neighborhood. As spokes people for the Free Streets event describe,
“This is about people being active and exploring parts of Philadelphia they may never have been to before.”
The Gateway to El Centro de Oro will be located at the intersection of 5th and Huntingdon, anchored by Taller Puertorriqueño on the West and Providence Center on the East. Join the Fairhill community for family-friendly activities, including jewelry-making, book-making, community storytelling, and much more! Popcorn, hot dogs and cotton candy will be available to all thanks to the NET Center.
Feel like getting your groove on? Free Latin fusion hip hop instruction will be offered at the Huntingdon Street Gateway at 9:30am and 10:30am.
North of Lehigh Avenue, El Centro de Oro will be packed with activities and food from local businesses. The Mural Arts Program will be stationed outside of El Bohio restaurant at 5th and Somerset, offering participatory painting for everyone.
At the top of the Free Streets route is Flavor of the Barrio at 5th and Indiana, where a full program of activities are scheduled to take place every hour. One truly not to be missed opportunity to get your booty jumping: Peter Watts Fitness Studio will be offering free Zumba instruction. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key for your kiddos, the Free Library of Philadelphia is hosting a reading nook. For the arts enthusiasts in the crowd, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be offering workshops from 9am-12pm.
The line up of family friendly activities and foodie opportunities in Fairhill continues to grow as the Free Streets event draws near. Stay tuned and don’t miss out!
